The power retractable hardtop was an option on the third gen Miata. My other half’s dad bought one and loves it.

Does the top take up the trunk or does it squeeze nicely in that cavity behind the seats?

As far as I know, it doesn't take up trunk space, just the area behind the seats. I'm sure some people around here object to the extra weight, but it makes for a more livable car.
